As you can see by looking through the site we are heavily into the imaging side of things. We’ve always been fascinated with photography and have, for the past 17 years completely immersed ourselves in imaging of one form or another. Mind you it’s not without its dangers. Whilst it looks cool and easy to swim around in waves and take photographs it comes as a surprise to hear that one meter squared of seawater is equal to one metric tonne in weight! This in itself brings home the realization of pain experienced when you see people getting slammed by ‘just a small wave’! We’ve had our fair share of slightly ‘wobbly’ moments, the recollection of some of them have found their way into Blog threads at some time or another, and will again in the future no doubt.
Whilst the imaging side of things here at liquidmocean tends to appear to be solely oriented around Ocean and Surf Sports we’re also passionate about other aspects of photography too, in fact most genres are appealing to us, the art of painting with light never gets boring. That said it is the realm of water, and other liquids and scenarios involving them that fascinate us.
Thinking that Bali is just sea, sand and nightlife and due to an injury sustained by a photographer friend, we were recently able to attend a canyoning trip into the incredibly picturesque Balinese interior. Three hours spent walking, falling, rappelling and jumping in, around, over and down rivers and waterfalls in what we saw as one of the most idyllic locations thus far encountered on the island. The application of using a surf water housing to document this adrenalin sport goes without saying, able to attain angles and applications that a non-housed camera could ever achieve is a huge bonus.
Now it’s got to be said that the idea of a surf photography with a penchant of canyoning paints a pretty hardcore picture of an adrenalin seeking service to the max. So there’s got to be a ‘Geeky’ side to us also? Well, yes of course, and we’ll be the first one to add that our particular fascination allows us to really investigate the tremendous qualities of the liquid medium. Now there are days when the waves are not working, when the swell is non existent, days when the lack of rain had dried all the rivers and laid barren the mountainous slopes of this verdant isle, and it’s on such days that we ‘get our geek on’ to coin a phrase.
Whether it’s rolled up into a seething mass of energy or falling graciously from terrestrial arteries, water, and all liquids for that matter, retain certain characteristics that simply fascinate us. We started messing around with high speed photography during an afternoon in south Africa when, due to the weather having closed in on a dive intensive project, were bored silly. At that time using simple hand/eye coordination, not good for the camera shutter and equally negative for our rapidly depleting hair follicles we played around with dripping taps and an array of ‘sets’. Rather than reach premature baldness we decided to invest in a high speed photographic timing gear that would allows us to connect a complete apparatus to our cameras and computers and then, by adjusting the various settings, really delve into the world of liquid characteristics. From water splashes, such as “Satisfaction” above, to standard water droplets and beyond we’re able to freeze amazing moments in time that appear and disappear within milliseconds, never to be aesthetically recreated identical to the previous. Yep, pretty geeky we admit.
